Disney World updates – January 2018

I have returned from a quick visit to Disney World. Here are some updates:

Fourteen out of fifteen dated 2018 coins are available in the same locations as last year.  The Stage 1 Company store quarter machine at Hollywood Studios is the only one not available. Although the back half of the store is open (and the Muppets penny press is accessible), the front half of the store (which includes the quarter machine once found at Mickey’s of Hollywood) is closed for renovation. No word on when that machine will become available.

The PizzeRizzo restaurant at Hollywood Studios (it replaced Pizza Planet) is only open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Plan accordingly if you want to hit the two penny presses (one on the first floor, one on the second floor). I was able to gain access after hours, but be aware the doors may be locked when you arrive!

The Run Disney penny press will be hard to get to. Its location at ESPN Wide World of Sports is open only periodically, and the on-line schedule of events at that building is unreliable (an event for this week had a link to a 2016 event).  The building is now called the Visa Athletic Center; it was recently changed from Jostens Center and J Center.

New signs at the Magic Kingdom tell guests they can get change at cashiers.

The new 8-die zinc-dispensing machines at Hollywood Studios (two at Once Upon a Time, Tower of Terror, Celebrity 5 & 10) are not pressing well.  The vast majority of coins roll slightly short, cutting the design off at or before the border dots.  A fair number of coins are also pressing off center, although the full design remains visible.

The Cirque du Soleil machine is retired.  The building will be used again for a new show with more of a Disney theme (date uncertain), but Disney Security tells me the interior has been completely gutted to prepare for the new show.  Nearby, DisneyQuest was demolished in late 2017 and its two DQ machines retired. The Wreck-It Ralph machines were transferred to the Art of Animation Resort.

The two Port Orleans presses added in 2017 are easy to access. One is in the French Quarter lobby; the other is adjacent to the lobby outside Scat Cat’s Club (it’s not at the food court).  Both are accessible 24/7.

For those who like to bend the rules, I was able to manipulate the dime press at Space Mountain/Tomorrowland Light & Power Co. to accept pennies. I’m selling a couple sets pressed on zinc pennies on the website.

Penny books update: Although I have seen Ebay listings for a new Disneyland book, all the merchandise locations at Disney World were still selling the 2016 version and the Pixie book.  For samples (as well as other Disney penny books) see the link here.

The store at Test Track (Epcot) is now called SIMporium.

January 2017 updates from Disney World

There are a lot of updates this month, so I’ll just rattle them off quickly.

2017

The 2017 coins have been in place since the first week, but machines have been out of order so it is difficult to build complete sets.  During my visit, three machines (out of 15 with dated designs) were broken.

Disney Springs

A new 4-die machine was installed at the walkway outside the World of Disney Store with new designs.  They are available for sale on my website.

Magic Kingdom

The two machines at Verandah Breezeway connecting Frontierland with Adventureland were removed in December.  The Adventureland designs came back in January.  The change machine also returned.  The Island Supply machine with Lion King designs did not return.

There are no longer change machines at the Tomorrowland Power & Light location; the arcade has closed.  The penny, dime and quarter machines are still there.

The 8-die Toy Story machine in Tomorrowland is located inside the photo pickup area of the Buzz Lightyear ride.  The 4-die machine at the Buzz Lightyear kiosk has returned.

Epcot

Innoventions once again has machines in both the East and West buildings.

Hollywood Studios

The official maps don’t show this, but the 4-die Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster machine in the courtyard is still at that location.

The Tower of Terror courtyard machine (4 dies) continues to roll short for copper pennies.  One contributor to my Facebook page reports that he had better luck with zinc coins.

Although Pizza Planet once housed numerous penny presses, its replacement PizzeRizzo has none.

The Celebrity 5 & 10 machine is inaccessible during renovations of the neighboring photo shop.

Miscellaneous

The price of penny books has gone up to $11.99.  The new design and the Tinkerbell design are both available at most locations.

The two Wreck-It Ralph machines have been moved from inside Disney Quest to the store.

The machine outside Pioneer Hall at Fort Wilderness was not found on my mid-January visit, and cast members did not know what happened to it.

Mystery solved!

Do you have a penny book with the shaped ears?  Have you ever wondered what the small pockets were for?  Thanks to “instructions” on the new books, we now know that those tiny slots are intended for unpressed pennies.

This one’s from Disneyland, but I’ll bet the Disney World books feature the same.

New penny books at WDW, DL

bk-2016dlbk-wdw2016

We received news in early December of new penny books at the parks.  The Disneyland book on the left is already available; the photo comes from an Ebay listing (seller squarecollectibles1).  The second photo shows the Disney World book; the photo is a screen shot from a merchandising webpage at Disney World.  I don’t know if the new book has hit the WDW shelves yet.

Incidentally, at the top of this Blog page you will find various links, including one for Disney penny books.
